The Black Eyed Peas are Dead to Me

How has this happened, the abandonment of a band whose first two albums Behind the Front and Bridging the Gap) are still great works in the hip-hop pantheon (at least in my humble opinion)? A band that I have seen in concert not once but TWICE?

The sad fact is that they have started to, well, suck more and more with each album. Elephunk was OK, but I didn't like it all that much, and though I have not heard their last album in its entirety, let's just say that it is probably all terrible. Why do I make this harsh assumption? One major piece of evidence that has recently (and painfully) come to my full notice. I had read about it, heard about it, but only this last week did I actually hear it: "My Humps." Yep, that's it. A song about Fergie's T & A. Don't get me wrong, she's pretty hot, but DAMMIT, don't sing a whole song about your tits. And guys in the group, you have written SO MUCH BETTER LYRICS than "Whatcha gonna do with all that ass?" (6x, thank you).

Where's the socially conscious lyrics? The clever wordplay? The songs not about Fergie's "lady lumps?" I won't blame it all on Fergie- in fact, I thought she would make a good addition- but that potential has failed to materialize. Since she has shown up, the band has sucked. I know guys do dumb things when they're around a hot chick. Maybe that's what's happened to their TALENT.

From MTV.com:

Idiotic or not, "My Humps" is a smash that's suddenly redefined "humps" and "lovely little lumps" as part of the human anatomy.

Fittingly, the song stemmed from a conversation Will was having with a friend when a beautiful woman walked by. When the rapper asked, "Whatcha gonna do with all that junk," his friend replied, "You should turn that into a song." He got a second opinion when he crossed paths with the woman again and stopped her.

"I was like, 'Hey, my homeboy told me I'm supposed to make a song about you,' and she said, 'Oh yeah, well how's it supposed to go?' " Will recalled. "I was like, 'What you gonna do with all that junk, all that junk?' And she was like, 'That's probably the best pickup line I ever heard.' I was like, 'No, I'm not trying to pick you up!' "

The Peas are still insisting the song is more than just a pickup line — that it's about a woman dissing a man.

"I would hate for my sister to be treated like that," Will explained. "Writing it, I wanted to make it to where a girl would feel like, 'Yeah, that's right. [Will starts dancing.] Shoot, don't pull on my hand!' "

"I go out to the clubs and I love to dance and shake my booty, and also at the same time it doesn't mean I'm going home with you," Fergie further explained.

Thank you for the additional info. However, the song still sucks. I know you agree with me on that one.

Somehow, I don't think "I'm [going to] make you scream" is that dissing to a man. But then again, I'm not a man.

Yeah. The song is crap.

Ask Fuzzy how he feels about the song. As of last night at a karaoke bar...(tee hee)

You know what is worse than hearing that songs on the radio or on CD? Hearing a group of girls sing it none stop for hours. One will start singing, and like an infection, it spreads. The sad part is they aren't drunk or at karakoe. It just gets stuck in their heads and they can't/won't stop singing it. It makes me long for the day of "Don't worry be Happy", Toby Keith, or Kelly Clarkson.

Anyway, as to the fall of BEP, along of the blame can be layed at the feet of the producer of Elephunk, Ron Fair. Rons other magma opus is the Pussy Cat Dolls ablum. But the band has to take some credit because they went along with it.
